A short biography of Dr. Engelhardt...
I have been a teacher at Missouri Baptist University since 1999. I am the Education Site Coordinator for the Troy/Wentzville site. In 2010 I was made a full professor of education. I have been the Chairman of the Assessment Committee and member of the Institutional Review Board, Educational Capstone Project Committee, Educational Doctorate Steering Committee, among other responsibilities and duties. In 2004 I received the MBU Distinguished Teaching Award. Recently, I have worked oversees with the Beirut Baptist School in Lebanon and the Amman Baptist School in Jordan.
Before arriving at Missouri Baptist University I held a number of positions as administrator and teacher in a variety of public schools. I retired from the School of the Osage as the Assistant Superintendent for Special Services. The school was unusual in that it was at the Lake of the Ozarks, literally at the site of Bagnel Dam. I will have to admit working at a school in a resort area certainly was a different experience. Let me just say that the student population formed a perfectly bimodal distribution i.e., very wealthy and very poor. I had moved from a school district in rural Southeast Missouri. While at Woodland R-IV School District I did what all rural administrators do…I did it all! I was the high school and junior high school athletic director and principal. Then I became the elementary principal. This was soon followed by Director of Federal Programs, Special Education, and Transportation. After all that I needed a vacation! No wonder I moved to the Lake of the Ozarks. Previous to Woodland I was a middle school principal in the urban school district of Maplewood-Richmond Heights. This was a very diverse school district going through great change. The school had gone through 4 principals in 3 years. I am proud to say I stayed for 6 years and was able to make a number of significant improvements. My first position in education was in a suburban high school in the Hazelwood School District. There I taught high school social studies and of course coached swimming (you have to coach if you teach social studies) and was the technical director for the theatre.
My undergraduate studies took place at Southeast Missouri State University. I majored in world and American history and minored in music. I still play clarinet, saxophone, and string bass. My master’s degree in Secondary Administration is also from Southeast. I earned an Ed. S. in School District Administration and Ph. D. in Education with a minor in Research Methodology from Saint Louis University in 1988 and 1990 respectively.
Currently I have certificates as Superintendent, secondary principal, high school social studies teacher, middle school social science teacher, early childhood teacher, early childhood special education teacher, and parent educator. My goal is to continue to conduct educational research. Although I have published two articles “Where Have All the Manners Gone?” and “There’s a Bully in Your School”, I want to publish more. Some of the current research I am involved in include studies that center around the efficacy of the reading fluently program for various student reading levels, to validate (or not) the Missouri Pathways Student Survey, and to determine the mean and confidence intervals for Lawrence Kohlberg’s six stages of moral development.
However, I do have a life outside of school!
My wife, Lee Ann (an elementary teacher) and I have been married since 7/27/75 and have three great kids. Lee, who is 26, majored in computer science at MBU and is Technology Manager for Abstrak, Diana is a 23-year-old college senior majoring in mathematics and biology at MBU, and Dana, my 16 year old, is a 11th grader…Yes she is working hard to keep me young. My hobbies include sailing, fishing, power boating; notice the water theme? (After all, I do live at Lake St. Louis), golf, biking on the Katie Trail, and swing dancing. My wife and I also have season tickets to the Rams and the Saint Louis Symphony. (That way we have scheduled dates!). Our house is animal intensive with 3 cats. I do have to admit that the cats do test my teaching abilities!
